Opening Quote: "Fee fi fo fum... I smell the blood of an Englishman..." – Jack the Giant Killer

Scene: Judge Logan Patterson arrives to his house. He leaves the garage to go into the house.

[He stops for a second when he hears a snap of a branch. He walks to his door and unlock it. His alarm starts to beep. He locks up and reactivates his alarm. Outside his home, someone is standing there and they walk on. Sometime later, Judge Patterson is working on his office when he hears the same noise from earlier. He hesitates before going back to work but he hears it again. He turns off his desk lamp and goes to turn off another lamp near a window when he notices something. A very big man break through and attacks Judge Patterson. The alarm is going off as Judge Patterson goes to attack with a little statue but the man stops him and grabs his wrist making him scream in pain. The man hits him on the face and the Judge backs to his desk to grab his gun to then shoot at the man. He gets him on the chest but it barely does anything to the man. The man slaps the gun away and attacks the Judge. Judge Patterson fights the man with many objects but the man is barely tickled until the man gets the upper hand and beats to Judge, sending him to the ground. He grab a gavel from the Judge's desk and walks over to Judge Patterson. The Judge tries to stop him but is bested.]

Scene: A Police patrol car approaches the Judge's home where the alarm continues to go off. Sgt. Wu and Officer Messina arrive.

Wu: [to Dispatch] We are on the premises. We need an alarm reset from the security company.
Dispatch: Copy that, Sargent.
Wu: [to Dispatch] We are going to check the perimeter of the house.
Dispatch: I'm gonna find the alarm company now.
Wu: [looking around with a flashlight] Dispatch, we have a break-in. We don't know if there are suspects inside. We are entering the premises.
Dispatch: Advise if you need additional. [They walk around until Officer Kacey aims to a certificate].
Officer Messina: Oh, man. I recognize that name. [Wu is walking ahead looking around still] He's a state Judge.
Wu: [finds the Judge with the gavel down his throat] Not anymore. [To the radio] Dispatch, we have an aggravated homicide. Special circumstances. Victim is a state official, Judge Logan Patterson.
Dispatch: Copy that, Sergeant.
Wu: Looks like a B&E gone very wrong.

Scene: Somewhere, the man that killed the Judge is in his car. He is digging for the bullet in his left side with plyers. He looks barely fazed as he looks at the bullet. He grabs a bottle of liquor and drinks from it before letting it pour on his wound. He grunts in discomfort and then he is changing into an ogre-like creature.

Scene: At the scene of the crime, Nick and Hank have arrived as so have other officers needed.

Hank: [as someone takes out the gavel from the Judge] Damn shame for him to die like this. He was a great Judge.
Nick: What time did you enter the house?
Wu: 10:22 P.M. Alarm went off at 10:13.
Hank: [writing down the info] Gives us a good estimate on time of death.
Nick: Any witnesses?
Wu: Nobody's come forward. We talked to neighbors on both sides, and across the street. Nobody heard anything.
Hank: What about wife, children. Anybody live with him?
Wu: Judge lived alone. His wife died three years ago. No kids. Found a gun on the floor over here. We haven't touched it. Walter .32. We ran the serial number, registered to the Judge. He purchased it in 1995, had a license to carry it.
Hank: We find any casings?
Wu: One. Under the chair.
Hank: Well, at least he got off one shot.
Nick: You find the bullet?
Wu: Nothing in the walls or the ceiling. Windows are intact, so unless it went out the door...
Nick: Our killer might have been hit.
Hank: Any blood trail?
Wu: Plenty of blood. But it's all around the Judge.
Nick: If our perp took a shot, he'd need medical attention. Let's get an APB out to all hospitals, clinics--
Hank: Also, tap the snitches for any surgeons working off the grid.
Wu: On it. [he and Officer Messina leave just as Captain Sean Renard arrives].
Renard: [shaking his head as he looks at the Judge's body] Unbelievable. It's gonna make a lot of people angry.
Nick: I think it was just more than just a random act of violence.
Hank: Yeah. There's a lot easier way to kill somebody than to shove a gavel down his throat.
Renard: [squatting down to the body] Patterson was one of the best Judges we had. Worked a lot of cases that wound up in his court. He had, uh, over 30 years on the bench.
Nick: We requested all of the Judge's case files.
Renard: [standing up] Start with the most recent, see if there was any registered threats. Sure he made a lot of enemies in all those years.
Male CSI: Sir, we have a print off the gavel.
Renard: [looking at Hank and Nick] Let's find out who it belongs to.

Scene: The man is walking to the river under the bridge holding a chopped off hand. He throws into the water and looks menacingly pleased with himself.

Scene: At the Police precinct, Hank is sitting on his desk as Renard approaches him.

Renard: Any luck?
Hank: Nah. Nothing to write home about yet. We've been doing a cross-check on the Judge's cases against any recent parolees. So far, we've got three released in the last six months. [Grabbing folders] Lester Cambridge, paroled from Powder River. Scott Teller, released from Santiam six weeks ago, and Jamal Shutter--he just got out of Eastern.
Renard: Any of them back here in Portland?
Hank: All three of them. Nick's checking alibis. [The phone goes off] Griffin...I'm at my computer. Send it through. Thanks. [he hangs up] Got an I.D. on the print from the Judge's house. Got a match from the Navy.
Renard: One of your parolees?
Hank: Nope. Name's Vince Chilton. Got no record at all. [the picture is not of the man that killed the Judge].
Renard: See if we can get a match on a driver's license.
Hank: [pulling up record] Renewed it two months ago. Got an address here in Portland.
Renard: All right. Let's go. [they leave]

Scene: S.W.A.T team is making their way to the Vince Chilton's apartment. The lead Officer is ahead.

Lead Officer: [quietly] Go, go, go. [They break the door down] Portland Police. Go, go, go! [Outside Hank and Renard await] Go, go, go, go!
S.W.A.T Officer #1: Kitchen clear.
S.W.A.T Officer #2: Bedroom clear. [the rest of the team finds Vince's body] We're clear.
Lead Officer: [outside to Hank and Renard] We're clear. We secured the premises, but you got a body in there.
Hank: [walking in with a flashlight] Whew, man. [Vince doesn't have his right hand].
Renard: [squatting with Hank to see the body closer] Vince Chilton?
Hank: [looking at the picture of Vince that they've got] Looks like.
Renard: Which hand did the fingerprint come from?
Hank: The one he doesn't have.
Renard: So our killer needed a helping hand, and got it from Chilton.
Hank: Yeah, he wanted us to find him.
Renard: Means our killer's connected to both of them.
Hank: [looking closer to the severed hand] Woman's watch? Wearing it backside out. Looks pretty old. Antique maybe.
Renard: Doesn't seem like Chilton would be the kind of guy interested in women's antique watches, huh?
Hank: It's engraved. 'To Mary, love Mom.' It's definitely not Chilton's.
Renard: Yeah, we gotta find Mary.
Hank: Let's hope Mary's not connected to this.
Renard: Maybe we can trace the watch.
Hank: You know, Nick knows a watch guy.

Scene: At Monroe's home, Monroe is wearing boxers and a plain tee as he has breakfast whilst reading the newspaper when his phone goes off.

Monroe: [groggy] This is awful early.
Nick: [through the phone] Can you trace an antique watch?
Monroe: Wow. You're actually calling me for what I do? [it shifts to Nick at the precinct] Might have to charge you for this.
Nick: Yeah, we found one on a murder victim. I'm with my partner. [Back to Monroe's] We're coming over.
Monroe: I get it. Be cool, wear pants.
[Monroe opens the door, now dressed, and Nick and Hank are there]
Monroe: Good morning. Well, not that good if somebody died, I guess. But, uh, yeah. Come on in. [Hank and Nick come in. It feels a little awkward].
Hank: Thanks for helping us out.
Monroe: Not a problem. I like to help the--[looking at Nick] the police whenever I can.
Hank: [showing Monroe an evidence bag with the watch inside] This is the watch we need to trace.
Monroe: [looking at the watch] Vintage Lusina. Very nice. I'm gonna have to get in there and check a few details. You mind if I...
Nick: Forensics cleared it. Go ahead. [Monroe grabs the bag and takes out the watch as he walks to his working station]
Hank: [almost confused] Ok.
Monroe: [looking at the watch] Valjoux movement. 72 C, to be exact. Triple calendar. [Nick and Hank between amused and confused] Wow. Just pure beauty. Here, check it out. [showing them] triple complications. That's a day, date, month to the layman. Probably made in the '30s.
Nick: What about the engraving?
Monroe: Professional. Could have been done by any engraver, anytime, anywhere. [he's opening the watch] Oh, this is tragic.
Nick: What?
Monroe: Some jerk put glue in the movement. This watch is destroyed. I wanna weep.
Hank: Why would somebody do that?
Monroe: To stop it from working.
Nick: Maybe they wanted to stop it on a specific time and date.
Monroe: Glue would certainly guarantee that. [looking at it] 10:15, March 11th.
Nick: Any way you can tell us who the owner is?
Monroe: Original movement number maybe...or a service mark. I'll make some call. Whoever serviced this will definitely remember it.
Hank: How long will that take?
Monroe: Couple of minutes, if they've got the paperwork. There's coffee in the kitchen, help yourselves. Nick, you know where it is. [Nick looks a him. Monroe realizes his mistake] from the time you guys both searched my house. Remember? I mean, i-if you don't remember, it's right down that hall there.
Nick: [playing along] Yeah, I think I remember. [Hank follows Nick]
Monroe: Just right there in the kitchen there. [Hank looks back at Monroe confused before following Nick to the kitchen]
Hank: [to Nick in the kitchen] He's a little weird, isn't he?
Nick: Spends his life fixing clocks. [playing dumb] Wonder where he keeps his coffee cups.
Hank: You think March 11th has something to do with Vince Chilton?
Nick: [finds the mugs] Maybe. Or the Judge.
Hank: What about Mary, the name on the watch?
Nick: [clearly knowing his way around the kitchen] Maybe March 11th connects all three of them together somehow.
Hank: Maybe all four of them, killer included. But March 11th of what year?
Nick: Maybe we're looking at some kind of Zodiac killer here.
Monroe: Hey, I got something, actually. Turns out the watch was first purchased in 1933 by a Steven Armstrong--he gave it to his wife as a wedding present. She--
Hank: 1933. Who owns it now?
Monroe: Yeah, but I got the whole history.
Nick: And that's great, really, but we just need to know who owns it now.
Monroe: Oh.
Monroe: I get it. Ok. Just the facts, right? Ok. Let's see, the watch was serviced last here in Portland, actually. Two months ago. For a Mary Robinson.
Hank: Mary Robinson?
Nick: You know her?
Hank: If it's the same Mary Robinson, I do. Assistant D.A., retired about a year ago. I worked a lot of cases with her. I got a bad feeling about this.
Nick: [as they leave. To Monroe] Thanks. [he takes the watch].
Monroe: Anytime.

Scene: Hank and Nick arrive at Mary Robinson's home. There is yellow tape as it seems there has been a crime committed there. Wu is there.

Hank: You find her?
Wu: Found her body. [as they walk inside the house, a car passes by. It's the killer and he is looking at them. Wu takes Nick and Hank to the office area. Mary is dead, and her tongue has been cut off and put on a scale of Lady Justice] Killer cut out her tongue...and put it on the scale.
Nick: What's the message this time? Scales of justice?
Hank: No. She's the message. Mary Robinson herself. [upset] I know who the killer is.

Scene: At the precinct, Hank and Nick are walking with Renard.

Hank: It was a triple homicide five years ago. Jack Lambert, his wife, and seven-year-old daughter were abducted from their home and taken to an abandoned quarry near Tigard and tortured for two days. I'll never forget the crime scene.
Renard: Yeah, I remember the case. Oleg Stark was a contract killer. He was suspected of murders in Illinois, Kansas, and Colorado.
Hank: But this time, it was personal. Jack Lambert was a business associate of Stark's who knew that Stark demanded to be paid in gold [they walk into Renard's office]. Apparently, Jack found out where Stark stashed his gold and stole it.
Nick: It was a revenge killing.
Hank: That's why he got sloppy. He was angry. All the other people he killed, he didn't give a damn about. Stark left a gold coin behind--that's how I knew it was him. He was tried here in Portland but sentenced to a California ADX facility in Pelican Bay.
Renard: How'd he get out?
Hank: 24 hours ago, Stark escaped. He was on medical transfer when he got his chance. Broke the Doctor's legs and beat two guards into a coma.
Renard: Why didn't we know that Stark escaped?
Nick: Bulletin hit California state agency first. They thought they had him trapped, so they didn't go wide with it until he was long gone. Now this is from Stark's medical records: [reads from it] "convict displays signs of Congenital Analgesia, a rare genetic disorder which deadens the nerve endings, making it difficult to process pain. In addition, Stark's bone structure appears abnormally dense." Which basically makes this guy very unpleasant to deal with.
Renard: So what's Stark's connection to Judge Patterson, Vince Chilton, and Mary Robinson?
Hank: The Judge presided over the trial, Mary Robinson prosecuted the case. Vince Chilton was the Jury Foreman who handed the verdict to the Judge. Remember the time and date on the watch? 10:15, March 11th. That was the moment Stark was sentenced to 300 hundred years in prison. I knew it was something, but I didn't put it together till I saw Mary Robinson's body.
Renard: That would mean, as the arresting officer, he's coming after you next.
Hank: I'm gonna take this bastard down.
Renard: No, no. No, you're going into protective custody.
Hank: [pissed] I'm not running.
Renard: He's already killed three people--I'm not about to lose a cop.
Hank: [raising his voice] He's killed a lot more than that.
Renard: I'm not gonna risk it, and neither are you. I understand why you wanna get him. I'd feel the same way. But protective custody, that's my call, not yours.
Nick: [trying to defuse the tension] Once Stark escaped, he had to move fast. We need to check for stolen vehicles, assaults, and B&Es from here to the state line.
Renard: [to Hank] Well, get on it.
[Nick and Hank are at their desk working]
Nick: You know this guy's been shot three times and stabbed twice, right?
Hank: [a little condescending] Yeah. I know.
Nick: [defeated] Hank...the Captain's just doing what he thinks is right.
Hank: [bitter] What's right for him is not right for me.
Nick: Give us 24 hours, see if we can't get it done.
Wu: [coming up to them] I think I got what you're looking for. 68 year-old man reported his car stolen from rest stop on I-5 near the California border. Perp fitting Stark's description drove off in his blue '92 Cadillac Coupe de Ville, license plate 807 IHO. If that Caddy's in Portland, we'll find it.

Scene: Oleg Stark parks the stolen car in a parking lot while Frank Sinatra's 'I've got the world on a string' plays. He grabs a small stuffed monkey that's in the car. He gets out of the car and he stuffs the toy inside the fuel tank then he ignites it. He walks toward a lady to help her cross the street.

Stark: Hey, lady. He grabs her arm.
Lady: [confused] What are you doing?
Stark: Helping you cross the street.
Lady: Oh, thank you, young man. You're very kind. [He helps her walk down the street and asks for some cars to slow down, and as they reach the other side of the street, Stark's stolen car explodes].
Stark: You're driving. Let's go.

Scene: Back at the precinct. Nick brings Hank a cup of coffee.

Nick: So, what do you know about Stark?
Hank: What do you mean?
Nick: Where's he from? Does he have any family? Maybe we can get ahead of this guy.
Hank: You know, that was one of the weird things about him. He didn't seem to be from anyplace. No record of where he was born, no record of a family. It's like this guy just fell out of the sky.
Wu: [coming to them with a piece of paper] Found the Caddy. Or what's left of it. Blown up in a parking lot across from a city rec facility. 20th and Belmont.
Nick: Wait a minute. Isn't that near your old place?
Hank: I lived a block away when I worked Stark's case. [getting up to go with them] I guess this is my wake-up call.
Renard: [coming out of his office with his coat] Hank, you're not going anywhere.
Hank: [incredulous] Captain!
Renard: Right now, the safest place for you is her at the precinct. [To Nick] Let's go. [Nick looks sorry as he walks away]

Scene: At the scene of the crime, firefighters have put the flames out. Nick, Renard, and Sgt. Wu arrive.

Nick: [to the Fire Captain] Any witnesses?
Fire Captain: We had some people of scene when we got here. Quite a few of them in the park. Nobody said anything to us.
Renard: You make a determination on the cause?
Fire Captain: It's obvious somebody meant to do this. No attempt to hide it. [Wu is looking at the car plate] Open gas tank, stuffed something inside, lit a match, walked away.
Wu: Plates on the Caddy are a match for the one that was stolen.
Renard: Then it's Stark.
Nick: Thank you. [Across the scene, Stark is there watching them]
Fire Captain: [shaking Renard's hand] Need anything else, let us know. [As Stark keeps watching, Nick begins to feel like someone is looking at him so he turns but Stark is now gone]

Scene: At the trailer, Nick is looking to connect Stark's medical diagnosis to a description of one of the creatures in the Grimm books.

Nick: Congenital Analgesia. Abnormally dense bones. [He reads a few pages in which he finds an ogre-like creature named Siegbarste and then he is looking at the lazy Susan that contains glass bottles of poisons that can be used against certain creatures. Then he is opening the weapon cabinet where he finds an elephant gun with an engraved metal piece that shows that it is to be used against Siegbarste.]

Scene: It's night time, and a man arrives somewhere and parks his truck. As he gets out, he is attacked by Stark who then steals the car.

Scene: Nick arrives to his and Juliette Silverton's home.

Nick: Honey? [he doesn't get a response. The house is quiet] Juliette? [As he walks into the kitchen his phone rings. He answers] Hey, where are you?
Juliette: [through the phone] Hey, on my way home with fresh ravioli. Where are you?
Nick: Ooh. I'm in the kitchen.
Juliette: Good. Boil the water on the stove. I'll be right there.
Nick: Will do. [he hangs up and turns on the stove top where the water is. He steals a piece of something and eats it as he walks back into the living room taking his jacket off. Then there's a noise outside. He doesn't check it out as he hears nothing again] Damn raccoons.
[another noise makes him stop. He approaches the window, and then Stark is breaking through and attacks Nick. Stark has the upper hand as he begins to push Nick against things harshly. Nick goes for his gun but Stark hits it away. Nick is slammed against a small side table which breaks and now Nick is on the ground]
Stark: Where is he? [he walks over to Nick who can barely get up. Then Stark is shifting into a Siegbarste. He asks louder] Where is he? [Nick looks a bit agitated to see Stark turn. Stark grabs Nick again and throws him to the table, he slides to the floor into the broken glass. He grabs Nick again who is making pained noise at the rough handle] Where is he? [He throws Nick again, and this time Nick grabs a knife from the kitchen counter and takes a hit to Stark but it does nothing. Stark grabs Nick's wrist and as he looks at him, Stark freezes and turns back] Grimm. [Angrily, he lets him go and Nick grabs the glass blender which he breaks as he smashes it against Stark's head. Nick is thrown back into the leaving room where Stark grabs him and punches him on the stomach. Nick groans in pain. Nick is thrown to the ground again just as Juliette comes home].
Juliette: Nick! [Stark turns to her]
Nick: [barely managing to talk and move] Run, run! [Juliette runs into the kitchen and tries to grab a knife but as Stark comes in, she grabs the boiling water and throws it at him on the face].
Stark: [in pain and covering his face] Aah! [he keeps screaming in pain and Nick--who has dragged himself to his gun, shoots at him. Stark groans and Nick shoots again but this time Stark break the backdoor and leaves. Juliette runs to Nick]
Juliette: Nick.
Nick: [wheezing] Call Hank. You have to call Hank. [Juliette hugs him softly as he pants in exertion and pain]

Scene: At the hospital. A Doctor is telling Juliette and Renard the diagnosis on Nick's injuries.

Doctor: He has three bruised ribs and a dislocated shoulder to go along with a mild concussion. Nothing broken, however. He's very lucky.
Juliette: [as the Doctor leaves] Thank you. [they watch a beaten Nick lay on his bed]
Renard: I've got units posted here at the hospital and outside your house, 'round the clock, and I'll have an escort take you home. This guy won't get anywhere near you, I promise.
Juliette: You know who did this?
Renard: Yeah. I've got every cop in the city looking for him. [looking at Nick] Trust me, he'll pay for what he's done. [he leaves]
Nick: [waking up] Juliette.
Juliette: [walking into the room] Hey.
Nick: [softly] Hey. Where's my ravioli?
Juliette: [tearing up and laughing] I spilled the water.
Nick: Yeah, you did. You probably saved my life. [Juliette starts to cry and grabs his hand] I'm sorry.
Juliette: It's not your fault.
Nick: I'm so sorry, Juliette, it is. It happened in our house...[starts to get upset] with you.
Juliette: I'll be fine. So will the house. Nick, you need to rest. [she leans down to be mere inches away from him] I love you so much. [she kisses him]
Nick: [not meeting her eyes] I love you, too.
Juliette: Go to sleep. I'll be back in the morning. [Juliette leaves. As soon as she is out, Nick grabs his phone which was laying next to him. He calls Monroe who is at home having a quiet dinner. He answers]
Monroe: Hey, I'm actually glad you called. I found out a whole bunch more information about that watch. Yeah, it was--[gets worriedly quiet] what? [gets even more worried] What? [he stands and leaves]

Scene: Juliette arrives home with the police officers.

Officer Messina: Would you like me to stay inside with you?
Juliette: [who is watching the mess the house is] No, no. I'm--I'm...I'm fine. I have a lot to do.
Officer Messina: Well, we'll be right outside. We'll have two cars, one on each street, with all entrances covered. Good night. [she leaves and Juliette is upset as she looks at the mess. She then remembers when she came home to see Nick on the floor telling her to run to then remember burning Stark and when he ran out. She begins to softly cry when she sees a picture frame of her and Nick. She is now kneeling on the ground crying].

Scene: At the precinct, Sgt. Wu is telling what happened to Hank who looks pissed.

Wu: Stark went after Nick at his house. Must've followed him home sometime after he blew up the car.
Hank: He was probably watching the whole thing, waiting for me. When I didn't show, he took my partner.
Wu: Yeah. That's kind of what we were thinking.
Hank: Was Juliette there?
Wu: Yeah, for part of it. A good thing too. If she hadn't come home, who knows?
Hank: She ok?
Wu: She didn't get hurt.
Hank: That son of a bitch. [Hank walks to his desk and grabs his jacket. He's on his way out with Wu when Renard arrives]
Renard: [warningly] Hank.
Hank: I'm going to see Nick. [walking past Renard]
Renard: Hank, he's gonna be fine. [follows Hank as he walks away] You can't do him any good right now.
Hank: [turning around] I'm not staying here. This is my responsibility.
Renard: And the safety of my men is my responsibility. Look, I wanna get Stark as much as you do, but I'm not gonna lose another man doing it.
Hank: We won't stop until he gets me. The only way nobody else gets hurt is if I do this alone.
Wu: What if he just thinks you're alone?
Hank: What are you talking about?
Wu: Set a trap...with you as bait?
Hank: How?
Wu: Roadblock, spike strips, S.W.A.T. units all around, pick a place we can control.
Renard: Ridge Crest Pass. Two lane road. One way in, one way out. Could work.
Hank: But I'll have to get him there.
Renard: Stark attacked Nick for a reason. Not to kill him, but to draw you out. He knows you're gonna go see him.
Hank: Ok. Then we'll let him think it's worked. Like I said, I'm going to see Nick. [he leaves].

Scene: Nick is having a nightmare as he dreams about Stark attacking him at his house. He wakes up when Monroe softly touches his arm. Monroe looks very worried.

Monroe: I don't know what you were just dreaming about, but it couldn't have been good. Who did this to you?
Nick: He was big. And he...has a rare genetic disorder. It would deaden the nerves, and, uh...abnormally dense bones.
Monroe: Siegbarste. Your basic ogre. [Nick sighs] You're saying you saw one here in Portland?
Nick: Yeah.
Monroe: Aw, man. Just got a knot in my stomach. Siegbarste are the worst. I mean, fortunately, they're very rare, but if you ever run across one--[he looks at Nick] Well, I guess you have.
Nick: You've dealt with one before?
Monroe: Yeah. When I was a kid. I mean, I didn't deal with him directly. He came after a neighbor of mine, two doors down. Their son Freddy was a buddy of mine. This guy beat Freddy's dad to death in his own garage, and then used his tools to...you know. Trust me...you're lucky to be alive.
Nick: He's after Hank.
Monroe: Hank? Why?
Nick: He put him in prison.
Monroe: Ooh, yeah. That'll do it. These guys carry grudges to the grave. And usually it's your grave.
Nick: I have to stop him.
Monroe: Good luck with that. Look at you, he already put you in the hospital, man. Siegbarste are hard to kill. Not only do they have really dense bones, they have thick skin, and body odor that could stop a train.
Nick: They're not immortal.
Monroe: No, they're not immortal, but in order to take one down, you gotta get close enough to do it before they knock your block off. Unless, of course, you have some Siegbarste gift.
Nick: What?
Monroe: Gift. German word for poison, which I always found kind of weird at Christmas, but...that stuff is so rare. [Nick is remembering the things he found earlier at the trailer] I mean, you could search your entire life and never find any. It literally grows on the north side of trees just below the timber line in Romania or something.
Nick: I think I have some.
Monroe: What kind of meds they got you on, man?
Nick: From my aunt.
Monroe: Oh.
Nick: What's it do?
Monroe: Calcifies their bones. So you sort of shatter the ogre from the inside out. The trick is getting the poison in them. Nick: I think I know how to do that. [he remembers the elephant gun from earlier] There's a rifle. It's made for it. I need you to get it for me.
Monroe: Um...ok...he said, somewhat tenuously.
Nick: [quietly] All right, there's a trailer.

Scene: Monroe arrives at the trailer. He takes out a flashlight to look around before he opens it up.

Monroe: [looking around, awed] Oh, man. [he turns on the light and looks up] Dad...I swear to God, I'm doing the right thing. Ok...[he begins to look for the things he needs] where is this? Siegbarste, Siegbarste...no that's not it. [he spins the lazy Susan and then he finds the poison] Ah. There you are. [he grabs it and takes a sniff of it] Ooh! Yeah...[sniffs and cringes] that's gonna stick with me for a while. [he puts it down] Ok, big cabinet...[he opens it and sees all the weapons] this is...awesome! [he looks around until he finds the case for the gun and takes it out] This is a total freak show. [he chuckles and begins to put the gun together. He plays with it for a bit. He takes it apart to look at the barrel] That is a big rifle. [he puts it back and then he finds the big bullets] Big rifle, big bullets. [he grabs the poison and grabs some scissors/tweezers. He grabs a bullet with it and then dips inside the bottle. He blows to dry it but gets a whiff of the smell and cringes away] Ooh.

Scene: At the hospital. Hank arrives and Stark is waiting outside in a car. His face is badly burnt from the boiling water. Hank goes up to see Nick. Hank looks upset as he sees Nick, who is watching him too.

Hank: I don't even know where to start.
Nick: You can start by telling me what the hell you're doing here. You're supposed to be on lockdown.
Hank: Didn't work out. How you doing?
Nick: It would make me feel a hell of a lot better if you were back at the precinct.
Hank: It's all right. We're bringing Stark in.
Nick: How?
Hank: Just throwing out a little bait.
Nick: I think I know how we can bring this guy down.
Hank: Captain's already got a plan. I'm supposed to lead Stark to a road block out on Ridge Crest. Everyone will be there waiting for him, and it's done. Simple.
Nick: Hank, listen to me. This guy...he's not normal.
Hank: I know what I'm doing. [a pregnant pause] and there's something you don't know. During Stark's trial, I did something. He had a good lawyer. All the jury needed was a reasonable doubt, and that monster was gonna walk. I followed through on a lead, a surveillance tape from a fast food joint across town. Guy looked just enough like Stark to maybe give him an alibi. It was bogus. Stark planter the guy himself. If one Juror had decided it was Stark, the whole case would've been tossed. I couldn't let that happen. And neither could Mary Robinson.
Nick: You lost the tape?
Hank: It somehow got misplaced on the way to the D.A.'s office. Neither of us ever spoke anything about it. But now you know too. I'm the last one Stark blames, so I'm going to end it where it started.
Nick: You're going to the quarry instead of Ridge Crest.
Hank: At least no one else will get hurt. So if anyone asks, you can say you tried to stop me. [he starts to leave]
Nick: No, Hank. Hank!

Scene: Monroe is outside of the hospital with the case when he gets a phone call from Nick.

Monroe: Hey, Nick. Whoa, whoa, man. Slow down. Yeah, I'm bringing you the gun right now. What do you mean Hank's leaving the hospital? What--[just then he sees Hank going to his car] Oh, yeah. Hank's leaving the hospital. Looks like he's going to his car. Want me to give him the gun? Does he even know about the gun? If he doesn't know about the gun, I'm not--[as Hank leaves, Stark follows] He's already leaving, how am I supposed to give him the gun now? All right, ok, all right, I'll do my best. [Monroe gets back to his car]

Scene: Hank is driving to the quarry and he notices Stark following him and Monroe is not far behind. Hank gets to the quarry and gets out to grab a gunshot from the trunk just as Stark arrives. Monroe gets there too put somewhere he doesn't get seen.

Monroe: What am I supposed to do now. [he gets out and finds someplace where he can see Hank. Meanwhile, Hank is closing the trunk of his car. Stark gets out of the car, leaving it on, and Hank aims his shotgun at him].
Hank: Stark...you are under arrest. Place your hands behind your head, face down on the ground.
Stark: Really like the place you picked. Lot of fond memories here.
Hank: Shut up and get down! [Monroe finally gets to the best spot] Do you hear me?
Monroe: Oh, man. [he begins to put the gun together]
Stark: You owe me five years. [Monroe is still at it]
Hank: I'm gonna say this one last time--get down on the ground.
Stark: Let's get this over with.
Hank: Stay where you are. [Stark gets back inside the car] Stay where you are!
[Hank shoots at the windshield of Stark's moving car as it approaches and doesn't stop until he is too close. Hank throws himself to the side but Stark still rams into Hank's car. Monroe is nervously prepping the gun and loading the gun. He drops one of the bullets but quickly picks it up. Stark gets out of the car as Hank gets back to his feet and grabs the shotgun. He goes to shoot but he is out, so he goes to hit Stark with the gun. Stark gets one hit before he quickly takes control of the gun and throws away to hit Hank. Hank gets a few punches in as Monroe is now closing the barrel. With one hit, Stark throws Hank to the ground, and Hank takes out his gun but is kicked away. They get into another fist fight until Stark has Hank on the ground again. He goes for a boulder and Monroe is now aiming at him. As Stark goes to throw it on Hank, Monroe shoots sending himself back from the force. Stark gets hit and dies as he hits the ground. Both Hank and Monroe look shocked].
Monroe: [whispering] Oh wow. Ok, time to go. Time to go. [he grabs the case and the gun and leaves]
Hank: [getting up and making a call] This is Detective Griffin. [out of breath] I want to report...a shooting.

Scene: Monroe is back at the trailer and is putting the gun back. He starts to leave and sits on the hood of his car and calls Nick.

Monroe: It's done. Hank is ok. Me? Eh, I'll live. Yeah, I'll see you. [he hangs up and looks pensive]

Scene: Hank is at the Hospital telling Nick what happened.

Hank: Stark is dead.
Nick: You killed him?
Hank: Somebody did, but it wasn't me.
Nick: Who?
Hank: I wish I knew. I owe him one.
Nick: [chuckles weakly] I'm glad you're ok.
Hank: You too.

Scene: The next morning, Hank is in Renard's office waiting for him. Renard comes in looking angry.

Renard: [closing the door behind him] You're lucky to be alive. Pulling a stunt like that, I should have your badge.
Hank: If you want it, you can have it.
Renard: [sitting down on his chair] Well, I'd rather have you alive and wearing it. Look, don't get me wrong, I wanted Stark dead too. But that's not the way this department works. You insulted every cop in this city, and we had just as much right to be there as you did.
Hank: Ok. I get it.
Renard: You're a good Detective, Hank. But you're a lot better when we're all working together. [he grabs an evidence bag] These...are the bullets pulled out of Stark's body. [he grabs them and set them in front of Hank] According to Ballistics, one .577 and two .600 caliber nitro-express rifle bullets. Made in England over 100 years ago. [Hank grabs one to look at it]
Hank: What Kind of rifle is that?
Renard: Triple barrel, very rare. Made mostly for royalty for their African safaris. Commonly known as an elephant gun. [Hank set the bullet down and Renard grabs it to look at it closely].
Hank: Who the hell would have a gun like that?
Renard: That is something I'd very much like to know. [he sets the bullet down].
