Opening Quote: "We shall see the crumbs of bread... and they will show us our way home again." – Hänsel and Gretel

Scene: Two boys, Kevin Standish and Steven Bamford, are running in woods, shirtless and tired. One of them is helping the other who looks very weak.

Kevin: Come on, Steven, do not give up. [there's a creature roaring in the back] Come on, Steven, you've got to run.
Steven" I can't.
Kevin: You have to!
Steven: Leave me. [there are people following after them, and they seem to be the ones making the creature noises] Just go.
Kevin: [they get into some low branches, and then Steven walks ahead to find himself falling into a river stream. Kevin worries] Steven!
[Steven is taken by the two people, and they look like monsters. Steven is now fighting to keep himself afloat. They leave Steven, but the two--now normal looking--people take Kevin back to whatever place they escaped. As they drag him inside the building there are two man disposing of a dead girl who's only wearing her underwear].

Scene: It's morning, and Steven is now dead as the stream carrying him on his back. A crow picks at his eyes, eating one and then picking at the other two fly away with it. Steven's body then falls down the stream.

Scene: At Monroe's, Monroe and Nick are having breakfast. Monroe is pouring milk.

Monroe: Sure you don't want a latte?
Nick: Yeah, black's good.
Monroe: Alright. If you say so. [looking at Nick] You look sort of uncomfortable. This isn't something you actually want talk about, is it?
Nick: My aunt, before she died, told me I should break up with Juliette.
Monroe: [chuckling] Shouldn't we be talking about this over a couple of beer at midnight?
Nick: [serious] I want to tell her.
Monroe: Tell her what?
Nick: What I can--you know, how I can see Blutbads and Siegbarsts and Hexenbiests--
Monroe: Ok, ok, ok. I see where you're going with this. Now I definitely could use that beer.
Nick: Look, it's gotten too dangerous for Juliette. She has no idea what I'm dealing with. [Monroe is adding something to his latte. While Nick is now pacing in the kitchen] And that other night, when I got attacked in my house...she could've been killed.
Monroe: [turning around to look at Nick] Have you not considered how you're gonna do this?
Nick: Well, I was hoping you could give me some advice. [Monroe laughs] I mean, haven't you ever had to explain who you are to anyone?
Monroe: You mean, like, a normal person? No. There's no good outcome to that. [Nick looks discouraged] Either they believe you and think they're crazy, or, far more likely, they don't believe you and they think you're crazy. Either way, it puts a strain on a relationship.
Nick: Well, I have to tell her something. You know, I can't jeopardize her like this.
Monroe: Maybe that's why your aunt told you what you have to do.
Nick: [quietly] Look, isn't there a way that you could...you know, Blutbad for her?
Monroe: Ok, just hold it. Given the right circumstances, you know, like a in the heat of the moment kind of thing, we can be seen if we want to be seen. Which, by the way, it counts for a great many of your legends. We would've gotten away with a lot more bad behavior if it wasn't for guys like you Grimms, who can see us when we don't want to be seen.
Nick: Ok, so I could bring her over here, and you could, you know, just a little bit?
Monroe: No, no, no, no, no, no. The vast majority of humans just can't process that kind of information. They can believe in all kinds of stuff, you know? Gods, for example. Angels and demons and dinosaurs and the Big Bang Theory and E=MC2, man, but that's only because it's not right in front of them. They're not looking directly into the boiling core of the raw universe. [chuckling] So, you know, confronted with that kind of reality...[less jokingly] a lot of brains just turn to mush.
Nick: [almost exasperated] So what am I supposed to do?
Monroe: Like I'm one to give advice? Come on. Even a normal relationship baffles me.
Nick: [his phone rings. He answers] Yeah?

Scene: At the river, Wu and another cop are with Steven's body as Hank and Nick arrive.

Wu: Hey. White male, late teens. Looks like something pecked out his eyes.
Nick: Any I.D.?
Wu: Nothing on expect for this. [he shows them] It was in his pocket.
Hank: Puka shell necklace. I haven't seen one of those since I was in Waikiki on my first honeymoon.
Nick: This kid looks like he went about 50 rounds with Mike Tyson. [he looks a the cascade].
Hank: Yeah, the fall from the rocks didn't do him any favors.
Nick: And the bruising looks postmortem. [bending down to look closer at the body].
Hank: Yeah, he probably died before he fell.
Wu: White fluid in his nostrils and around the edge of his mouth would suggest drowning.
Nick: Looks pretty pale, even for death.
Hank: Yeah, could be the cold water.
Nick: [he notices marks on Steven's neck, he moves his head to reveal two big puncture holes] Yeah, or this.
Wu: Well, anybody believe in vampires?
Nick: [Hank finds it amusing. Sarcastically] Ha-ha.

Scene: At the morgue, Harper is giving Nick and Hank the report on Steven.

Harper: I can't tell you exactly what his hemoglobin or hematocrit count was before he died, but by my estimate, this kid was cruising on about a fourth of a tank of blood.
Hank: So how many pints down is that?
Harper: Almost seven-plus.
Nick: Well, could he have been a hemophiliac?
Harper: I tested for that. Nope. [Nick looks surprised and confused] And no drugs in his system either.
Hank: [pointing] What about the wounds on his neck?
Harper: [turning Steven's head] Well, could be vampires, or someone who wants to be a vampire, or somebody who wants to get a lot of blood fast. These are about the size of an I.V. needle. My hope? It's an I.V.
Nick: Ok, so how does a kid get stuck in the neck with an I.V. needle, and end up in a river going over a waterfall?
Harper: I saw a lot of this sort of stuff in the late '80s, when the satanic cults were all the rage. But not lately. Maybe they're making a comeback.
Hank: So what killed him?
Harper: Oh, he drowned. But my guess is he drowned because he was incredibly weak from loss of blood.
Hank: SO was it an accident or a homicide?
Nick: Nobody puts I.V. needles in their neck by accident.

Scene: At the precinct, Nick and Hank are at their desk. Nick pulls up Steven's prints.

Nick: We got a hit on the prints...[Hank walks over to him] His name was Steven Bamford...18.
Hank: And he had a record already. Shoplifting, drug possession, B&E. Last known address, Portland P.O. Box. Zip is downtown. Check this out. [showing a map to Nick] We found the body here at the base of the falls. The river above covers miles of territory with limited land access. There's no way to tell where he went into that river.
Nick: Ok, we start at the P.O. Box, see if anybody knows him there.
Hank: Yeah, print a few pictures to take with us. [they grab their jackets and leave].

Scene: At the post office. The Manager is talking to Nick and Hank as they open Steven's P.O. Box.

Manager: He rented the box for about six months.
Nick: How often did he pick up his mail?
Manager: Every couple of weeks, but I haven't seen him in at least a month.
Hank: He ever come in with anybody?
