Ryan Smulson was a wide-eyed and enthusiastic student starting his internship with the Portland Police Bureau. He claimed his goal was to someday become a detective, and therefore he is looking to model himself after his idol and one of Portland's finest: Nick Burkhardt. However, he actually wants to be a Grimm so he will be feared and respected by all Wesen.
He makes his first appearance when Wu introduces him to Nick and Hank. After Wu decides that there's been too much brown-nosing, he leads him away. Ryan says that he has been following Nick's and Hank's cases ever since they found Robin Howell after she was kidnapped ("Pilot"). He then trips over a trash bin on his way out, causing the entire squad room to laugh at him, also indicating everyone that he is the new intern.
Nick arrests a Schakal who he believes is involved in the kidnapping of a young woman, but the suspect refuses to reveal any information. There is not enough evidence to hold him, so Nick is forced to let him go, surprising Ryan. Ryan goes to Zayne's house, brutally tortures him by branding a symbol onto him, forcing him to confess to 911. He murders him after, and paints the symbol on the wall with Zayne's blood.
In a press release the police show pictures of the crime scene, including the symbol which most Wesen recognize as the mark of a particularly brutal group of Grimms. Ryan calls Nick with the identity of another Grimm in this group, and accuses Nick of not doing his job and claims that simply being a Wesen is enough proof of guilt.
The police arrest a second Schakal also believed to be involved in the kidnapping who panics and accuses Nick of the brutal murder. While the detectives are searching his van for evidence, Ryan releases the Wesen. When Nick, Hank, and Wu review the security tapes, they see the reflection of Ryan in the glass of the door. They find the released perpetrator dead in a similar manner to Zayne. Ryan calls Nick again under the false identity.
He pursues Bud Wurstner, Nick's Eisbiber friend who had just visited him at the police station to confirm that he is working to stop the other Grimm. Nick and Hank visit Ryan's home and speak to his mom, who says they do not get along well. In Ryan's room, a wall is covered in photos of Nick. They manage to find Ryan just as he was about to brand Bud. Ryan claims that a Grimm who does not kill Wesen is not a true Grimm, and insists that he is a real Grimm.
In Ryan's agitation he woges to Nick and reveals that he is actually a Wesen, a Lamprey-like Lebensauger. Ryan still insists that that is not his true self and that he is really a Grimm, and begs Nick to kill him. Nick arrests him instead. Wu says that in the future they need to do "more thorough psychological screenings on prospective interns".
